In this article, we explore the Karunguru Coffee Farm Tour. Nestled within 500 acres of lush coffee trees, the Karunguru Coffee Farm is located along Kenyatta Road in Kiambu, off Thika Road, approximately a 35-minute drive from the Nairobi CBD.
Karunguru Coffee Farm is a wonderful destination for a family adventure. The first coffee trees at Karunguru were planted in 1928 by the Glassford family, who originally owned the farm before Kenya gained independence from British rule. The tradition of coffee growing has been a vital part of the Karunguru heritage since those early days.
In 1974, Mr. Kariithi Karekia purchased the 300-acre farm and expanded it to its current size of 500 acres. The Kariithi family still owns Karunguru and takes pride in being part of Kenya’s rich coffee farming culture and heritage.
Karunguru Coffee Farm Tour
The farm is picturesque, featuring rows of robusta and arabica coffee stretching as far as the eye can see. The guided farm tour is a must-do activity during your visit, where you’ll have the chance to handpick coffee cherries. All aspects of coffee production are conducted on-site, including drying, roasting, grinding, and packaging the finished product.
Tours are available daily from 11 am to 4 pm, except on Sundays and Mondays. The tour experience includes a brief introduction to coffee making, a comprehensive tour of the farm—from the fields to the packaging area—and a picnic lunch featuring locally grown vegetables from the farm gardens (or in a formal ballroom if the weather doesn’t cooperate). Naturally, there’s also a coffee tasting after lunch.
There’s also an on-site store with very reasonably priced bags of home-grown Kenyan coffee, starting at around $4.50. The farm is about 35 minutes from Nairobi, and reservations are required for tours, which cost $35 and include a farm tour, coffee tasting, and snacks.
The Karunguru coffee farm tour includes:
- A short welcome with a very short introduction to the process of coffee.
- Go outside in the lush gardens for a coffee-tasting experience.
- Tour around the farm to various sites which are synonymous with the coffee process, from the young seedling to the parchment grading process to the drying of the coffee
- Welcome to a 3-course buffet-style lunch with a drink that you can enjoy at the 1928 ballroom.
- After this, you can buy an array of items from the farm: coffee, jam, honey, and coffee shops at very affordable prices
