How To Apply For The Nairobi Expressway Toll Cards Online

The Nairobi Expressway is a major infrastructure project in Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi. It is an elevated highway that aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve transportation efficiency in the city. The project was initiated by the Kenyan government to address the growing traffic problems and enhance connectivity within Nairobi and its surrounding areas.

The Nairobi Expressway is the only road in Nairobi that requires payment to use. The expressway stretches for approximately 27kilometress, starting from Mlolongo, near the JKIA airport, and ending at the James Gichuru Junction on Waiyaki Way, which is a major road connecting the city centre to the western suburbs of Nairobi.

Motorists who want a smooth ride must obtain a toll card to use the chargeable toll road. The toll card can be obtained in person at the Nairobi Expressway Service Centre in the Cabanas area of the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. The offices are located on Mombasa Road, next to Ramtons.

Alternatively, one can apply for Nairobi Expressway toll cards online from the comfort of their office or home. The company that issues the toll cards is Moja Expressway, a subsidiary of China Road and Bridge Corporation, the same company that built the Nairobi Expressway.

How do I pay for Nairobi Expressway?

When driving on the Nairobi Expressway, there are three options for toll payment;

  1. The Manual Toll Collection (MTC) Card
  2. The Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) Service
  3. Cash

The third option (cash) involves no effort on your behalf. Drive to the toll station entry point, select a ticket and pay with cash at the exit.

How To Apply For The Nairobi Expressway Toll Cards Online

Follow the steps below to apply for Nairobi Expressway toll cards online:

  1. Visit the customer.nairobiexpressway.k and create an account to log in.
  2. Fill in the required details, indicating whether the account is for individual use or a corporate account.
  3. You will then be prompted to add a login password for your account.
  4. Before submitting the final details, you must read and accept the Nairobi Expressway’s toll card terms and conditions.
  5. To verify your details as accurate, you will receive a confirmation text message on the telephone number you indicated. Submit the verification message to proceed to the next step.
  6. Choose the type of Toll card you require, either MTC, ETC.

Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) card: This is the quickest way to use the Nairobi Expressway. However, it necessitates the installation of an On-Board Unit in your vehicle. Unlike the OBUs that come with used Japanese automobiles, the MOJA Expressway OBU is wireless. As a result, no wiring will be done in your vehicle. It features a small solar panel. When you approach the toll gate, the cameras automatically detect vehicles at the entry and exit gates without completely stopping your vehicle.

Manual Toll Collection (MTC) card: This is a cash-loaded card. It is activated at the entry and exit locations. It will open the barriers once you present the card at the entrance. You will have to load the card with funds as points to be deducted every time you use the expressway. Like the cash approach, it does not save time because everyone possesses it must line up.

NOTE:

  • If you choose an ETC card, you will have to attach copies of your national identification card, vehicle registration number and an original logbook. Additionally, add your official email and postal address and select your preferred OBU installation centre from their provided list. Currently, they only install it at their service centre offices along Mombasa Road.
  • Once you have chosen either of the two card options and filled in the required details, submit your application. Download and print your application.
  • You will take the printed copies to the Nairobi Expressway Service Centre to collect your MTC card, and ETC card. They will also install the OBU device on your registered vehicle.
  • Charges to install the OBU device and obtain an ETC are Kshs 1,000 installation fees and Kshs 2,000 minimum toll points loaded to your ETC card, valid for a year.
  • However, if you load your ETC card with Kshs 5,000 and above toll points, you will not be charged the Kshs 1,000 installation fee.
  • The MTC card attracts a service charge of Kshs 300 and Kshs 1,000 minimum toll points, respectively, to activate the card, also valid for one year.
