This is a simple guide on how to apply for new number plates through the eCitizen platform. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) issued an updated process to be used for the application of new reflective plates following the migration of government services to eCitizen. The application and payment process is now made via the E-Citizen platform.
The new number plates have new security features such as unique typography, a specially-imprinted national flag, and a hologram of the Big Five animals. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply for the new generation digital number plates in Kenya via E-Citizen.
New Number Plates Application on eCitizen
This new application process has been explained below following the migration of the number plate application process from Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS) to E-Citizen platform.
Step 1
Log into the eCitizen account
Select NTSA service portal which is a new tab in the section
Select the motor vehicle and click on view
Step 2
Click motor vehicle services then reflective plate
Select plate type and counter collection office
Attach the required documents in one PDF format
Step 3
Scroll down and tick the declaration box then click preview
Submit to pay for reflective plate and click complete
Collection notification will then be sent via SMS
NOTE:
- The entire process has been automated. All paperwork previously required has been eliminated.
- The application process has been simplified and reduced to 3 steps.
- The documentation required is a coloured copy of the logbook and pictures of the number plates (front & back).
- The application status can be tracked via the portal.
- SMS notifications are sent at every stage of application processing.
- The applications are verified and processed within 7 working days.
How much does it cost to replace a number plate in NTSA?
A single reflective Motor Vehicle number plate goes for Ksh 1,550 while a pair costs Ksh 3,050. Pay Ksh 1500 for Motorcycles and Preferred plates cost Ksh 30,000.
How long does it take to process a new number plate in Kenya?
It takes 7 days to get the new number plates. When an application is approved, the motorist will receive an SMS notification asking them to collect their plates from the centres indicated during the application.
Deadline for new number plates in Kenya
Plate registration dates commenced on October 1, 2022. Motorists who fail to change the number plates within the 18-month deadline will also attract a penalty of Ksh 20,000. The Deadline for applying for a new digital number plate is on 1st April 2024.
What are the advantages of digital number plates in Kenya?
The fonts and designs on the front and back plates are both visually appealing. In addition to being visually appealing, the new number plate includes a QR code, NTSA serial number, Kenyan flag, hologram, and microchip. It contains all of the vehicle’s information, such as ownership, colour, year of manufacture, vehicle type, chassis number, and so on. The features will make it very easy for the government to improve road safety, reduce vehicle theft, fraud, tax evasion, terrorism and track stolen vehicles.
