Here is a step-by-step guide on how to renew your driving license in Kenya. Driving a vehicle without a valid license is against the law in Kenya and can result in a fine of up to Ksh 1,000 if caught. To avoid this, renewing your driver’s license as soon as it expires is important.
Nowadays, the renewal process for a driving license in Kenya is conveniently handled through the eCitizen portal, a comprehensive platform for accessing various government services. Renewing your driving license online is a quick and easy process that can be completed in under 10 minutes.
Renew Your Driving Licence Online via eCitizen
1. Smart Driving License
Step 1: Log In To Your eCitizen Account
The eCitizen portal can be accessed via this link: https://accounts.ecitizen.go.ke/ . Upon a successful login, your details will be displayed above the website; you can therefore be sure you’re logged in to your account.
Step 2: Select NTSA services
Once logged in, navigate to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) section on the eCitizen Portal. Select the “Driving License Renewal” option from the provided services list.
Step 3: Enter your Personal details
After selecting the “Driving License Renewal” option, you must enter your Personal details, including your driving license number and national ID number. Ensure that the information provided is accurate and up-to-date.
Step 4: Verify your details
After entering your details, verify that the information provided is correct. If there are any errors, correct them before proceeding to the next step.
Step 5: Select the renewal duration
You will be prompted to select the renewal duration for your driving license, which can be one year or three years. Choose the duration that best suits your needs.
Step 6: Pay for the renewal
After selecting the renewal duration, you will be directed to a payment portal to pay for the renewal using M-Pesa, a credit or debit card, or any other payment method provided. It will cost you Ksh 3,050 to renew the smart driving license in Kenya valid for 3 years.
Once the payment is successful, you will receive a notification confirming the payment. You will then be directed to a page to download your receipt.
Step 7: Book an appointment
After payment, you must book an appointment to capture biometric data and collect your renewed driving license. Choose a convenient date and time for the appointment.
Step 8: Visit the NTSA office
On the day of your appointment, visit the selected NTSA office with the necessary documents, including your national ID, old driving license, and a copy of the payment receipt. Your biometric data will be captured, and your renewed driving license will be processed and issued within a few days.
2. Red Book Driving License
Step 1: Log In To Your eCitizen Account
The eCitizen portal can be accessed via this link: https://accounts.ecitizen.go.ke/. Click the sign-in button on the top right to log in.
Upon a successful login, your details will be displayed above the website; you can therefore be sure you’re logged in to your account.
Step 2: Select NTSA services
Scroll down and click on the Apply for a Driving License icon. You will then be redirected to the NTSA dashboard.
You will see your driving licence details and the status; in this case, it’s expired and we need to renew it. Click the Renew button below.
Step 3: Enter your Personal details
Under Type of Renewal, select the type of driving licence that you have; if it’s the Red Book, in this case, select it.
Enter your Personal details, including your driving license number and National ID number. Ensure that the information provided is accurate and up-to-date.
Step 4: Attach Your Passport Photo
On this tab attach your passport photo, it should be in JPG or JPEG format.
Step 5: Verify your details
Once you’re done attaching your photo check the box below to confirm that you have provided all the information required and click on Renew.
Step 6: Make Payment
There are several options available for payment, select the option you want and a drop-down menu with the instructions to pay will be displayed.
It costs Ksh 650 to renew your driving licence in Kenya for one year. Once paid click the complete button.
Step 7: Download The Renewed Driving Licence
When your driving license is renewed, click the download button on the top right to download it. Print and keep it with you in your car or save it on your phone so that you can present it to a traffic police officer if you’re asked for it.
