1. Manga Hills

The Abagusii community refers to this hill as the Emanga ridge. Standing on this hill, one can see the beautiful landscapes of Kisii’s southern parts up to the lake region. The Manga hills contain several historical facts, and anyone interested in history would not want to miss out on learning about the Abagusii beliefs. The hill has an endless hole known as Engoro ya manga, which is thought to have connected to the great Lake Victoria.

During the migrations, it is believed that the Abagusii people first settled on this hill before moving to other parts of Kisii. This hill is full of caves and massive rocks that provide shelter for the people and allow them to spot the enemy during attacks. Manga Hills served as the first court, which was known as Ritongo during the colonial era, and was useful in settling disputes and negotiating dowry prices. This hill is considered sacred/holy, and visitors must follow certain procedures. To gain access, one must tie a bundle of green grass and then collect some pieces of firewood, which are thrown into the hole. When faced with disasters such as drought, famine, and floods, community elders come here to offer sacrifices and offerings to their ancestors.

It is believed that when the region becomes extremely hot and dry, the ridge will burn and heavy rains will follow. Residents are said to see fire-burning bushes at night, but when they return the next day, they will find no evidence of the mysterious fire.
