Rimoi National Reserve Entrance Fees

In this article, we cover Rimoi National Reserve Entrance Fees. Tucked away in the scenic Elgeyo Marakwet County, is the little-known Rimoi National Game Reserve, home to East and Central Africa’s largest herd of elephants. The reserve is 40 kilometers from Iten town, the world’s athletics capital.

To get to the reserve, take the winding Iten-Kabarnet road, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The elephants at the reserve travel in groups of about 100, as opposed to other elephant herds, which travel in pairs or groups of three or five. Elephants are so unique in this regard that they train their young to belong to a herd rather than a small group.

The reserve is also unique in that wildlife scientists established it as a breeding ground for elephants that come to the sanctuary from neighboring Turkana and Samburu counties. The Rimoi elephants graze mainly at night for during the day, they shelter under riverine bushes because of the sweltering heat in Kerio Valley.

So visitors to the reserve should keep an eye out for elephants in these bushes or at night when they roam freely throughout the reserve. However, one must exercise caution because even the slightest provocation incites rage in these wild animals. Rimoi Reserve is also home to some unusual wildlife, including the world’s only white crocodile, which can be found at the campsite along the Kerio River. The crocodile population has declined as a result of human interference in its habitat. However, the Elgeyo Marakwet County Government and the Kenya Wildlife Service have intervened to rehabilitate the reserve, including fencing it off. Dik diks, guinea fowls, warthogs, baboons, and a wide variety of bird species also live in Rimoi.
