In this article, we will examine the newly revamped Uhuru Park entry fees. Uhuru Park is a 12.9-hectare recreational park adjacent to the Nairobi CBD. Kenya’s first president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, gazetted and opened it to the public on May 23, 1969, as an embodiment of the country’s freedom.
The park is also the home of the Mau-Mau Freedom Fighters Monument, which honors victims of torture during the colonial era. The park was closed to the public in 2022 for rehabilitation by the now-defunct Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS). The Ministry of Defence spearheaded the renovation.
While the renovations were ongoing, Nairobi County occasionally used the park to host events, including the Nairobi Festival in 2022 and 2023. Before the renovations, Uhuru Park was also a hot spot for political rallies in Kenya. The park is synonymous with hosting huge political rallies leading to general elections.
Newly Revamped Uhuru Park
The refurbished Uhuru Park now boasts manicured lawns, maintained trees, enhanced walkways, and green spaces. It offers diverse recreational and leisure options for parkgoers and a children’s play area with bouncing castles and merry-go-rounds.
The iconic Nyayo statue and the Mau Mau freedom fighters’ monuments have been updated, and a more defined Freedom Corner has been established in memory of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai.
The man-made lake has been transformed into a waterfront area with a Swahili restaurant, and the lilies pond has been turned into an aquarium named Uhuru Aquascape.
A botanical space has been set up to showcase Kenya’s floral biodiversity, with flowers and plants labeled for educational purposes. Management offices, event spaces, ablution facilities, physical exercise spaces, touristic features, and attractions are now available.
Among the other features are terraced sitting areas with a biosphere look, a dancing fountain along Processional Way, several eateries, and two high-end restaurants. A notable addition to the revamped Uhuru Park is a creatively transformed old aircraft into a modern, upscale restaurant, adding a distinctive charm to the park’s ambiance.
Furthermore, inside the park, Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) introduced innovative additions, such as ice cream parlors at various points. These parlors, constructed using old buses and other antique materials, aim to enhance the park’s aesthetics and provide recreational opportunities for visitors.
