Kiunga Marine National Reserve Entry Fees

This article focuses on Kiunga National Reserve Entry Fees. Kiunga Marine National Reserve is in Lamu County on the Indian Ocean coast. The Lamu Archipelago contains about 50 calcareous offshore islands and coral reefs.

Kiunga has it all. This is Kenya’s largest mangrove stand, with the tallest mangrove trees reaching 30 metres in height and a diversity of landscapes, seascapes, mangroves, mudflats, lagoons, dunes, beaches, sand islands, raised reef islands, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. The reserve’s location at the confluence of two major ocean currents creates unique ecological conditions that support three interdependent marine habitats: mangroves, sea grass beds, and coral reefs. Kiunga’s coral reefs are mostly patch reefs, with fringing reefs in the north. Microscopic marine plants, dugong grass, coastal scrubland, and mangrove swamps are among the vegetation.

The marine life consists of fringing offshore reefs with approximately 50 coral islands home to a thriving reef fish population. Kiunga is home to the Dugong, the world’s most endangered marine mammal. Sea turtles are also present (olive ridley and leatherback). A variety of seabirds nest in large colonies, as do Crab Plover and Roseate Terns in international numbers.

Kiunga Marine National Park Attractions and Activities

Visitors can go scuba diving, snorkelling, sunbathing, water skiing, and on Mangrove tours. The best time to snorkel over the coral reef is two hours on either side of low tide. This is when most marine life is visible, including the endangered sea dugongs and turtles that live here.
