How To Get The Nairobi Expressway ETC on your Car

The Nairobi expressway is the first major project in the country to be carried out through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and was officially opened by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on July 31 2022. The 27.1 km road runs from Mlolongo through the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Nairobi Central Business District to the Westlands area along Waiyaki Way.

The Nairobi Expressway, worth Ksh 89 billion, boasts 11 interchanges located at Mlolongo, Standard Gauge Railway, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Eastern Bypass, Southern Bypass, Capital Centre, Haile Selassie Avenue, Museum Hill, Westlands, and James Gichuru Road.

To pay for using the expressway, there are three options: cash payment, MTC Card (Manual Toll Collection), and ETC Method (Electronic Toll Card).

The ETC Method is the fastest way to use the Nairobi Expressway but requires the installation of an On-Board Unit (OBU) in your vehicle. Unlike OBUs found in used Japanese automobiles, the MOJA Expressway OBU is wireless, so no wiring is necessary. It also includes a small solar panel and the toll gate cameras automatically detect vehicles at the entry and exit gates. The ETC Service offers numerous benefits such as non-cash payment, time-saving, less fuel consumption, and discounts.
