In this post, we will focus on the Fort Jesus Museum Mombasa entrance fees. The Fort is located in Mombasa City along Nkurumah Road on the coast of Kenya. Fort Jesus is Mombasa’s most popular tourist attraction.
The fort, which was built by the Portuguese in 1593 and was designed by Italian architect Giovanni Battista Cairati, has withstood the test of time. It was constructed to ensure the security of the Portuguese population residing on the east coast of Africa. The fort has survived numerous assaults and hostilities. It even served briefly as a prison. The fort is now a significant historical site and a museum.
People can now visit Fort Jesus as a museum to learn more about the small island and to see some of Mombasa’s historical buildings, such as Oman House, which served as the Sultan’s residence when he served as governor of the East African coast. An exhibition of artefacts from the excavations at Fort Jesus, Manda, the Gede ruins, and Ungwana can be found inside Fort Jesus. Other significant locations to visit are,
- A Water Cistern, which the Portuguese used to harvest water, and a 76-foot-deep well. Strolling through the museum, you can also spot many artefacts, ceramics, and pottery items from the era when Mombasa used to be a major trading centre.
- Swahili Cultural Centre, where the youth of Kenya are trained in traditional Swahili arts and crafts. The training was also given on business management to enable the youth to learn the skills of self-employment.
- The Butterfly exhibit started recently and showcases a live butterfly exhibition, allowing you to learn more about the biodiversity among butterflies in Mombasa and their connections to the local communities.
