Kenya Narumoru gate and is the ideal base camp for those looking to summit Mt. Kenya or simply enjoy a day trip to Africa’s second highest mountain.
Built on a 4-acre property, sunrises at Whistling Thorns will reward you with a perfect view of Mt. Kenya while evenings will soothe you with vivid orange sunsets and beautiful whistling thorn tree silhouettes. Don’t forget to gaze up at the stars at night. And if you are lucky, you will wake up elephants crossing the garden.
Whistling Thorns Olpejeta Overview
The bungalow has a stylishly furnished living room with a large fireplace, a well-equipped open-plan kitchen, spacious bedrooms with comfy beds and snug and cushy beddings, and a large verandah with views of the endless Laikipia horizon. The house can comfortably sleep 6 people due to its three bedrooms. In the living room, there’s also an air mattress that can sleep two more people. The maximum number of guests allowed is eight.
A caretaker is on duty around the clock, seven days a week. There is no chef on-site, but arrangements can be made for a small fee. Since this is a place where you visit to connect with nature there’s no swimming pool, Wi-Fi or even TV. There’s lots of parking space available because the property sits on 3.5 acres.
A wonderful place to relax and observe nature. You immediately feel at ease. This cosy little house provides everything you need for a pleasant experience in nature. We highly recommend it to any family or friends looking for a getaway.
NOTE: The property relies entirely on rain-harvested water for its household use and solar energy for lighting and heating.
Whistling Thorns Olpejeta, in addition to providing tree seedlings to the surrounding community for reforestation, Whistling Thorns Olpejeta works closely with the locals to encourage sustainable agriculture by assisting members of the community in digging water pans, purchasing water storage tanks and roof gutters, and establishing tree nurseries. They are currently working with our neighbours to find long-term solutions to the human-wildlife conflict that has afflicted the area due to its proximity to the Olpejeta Conservancy.
Whistling Thorns Olpejeta Activities
Visitors can take long guided walks along the Olpejeta Conservancy fence, through the village, and even hike nearby hills and caves (special arrangements will be made on request for this) Of course, there is the option of driving to Olpejeta Conservancy or Solio Ranch for a game drive, as well as climbing Mt. Kenya. The nearest entrance to Mt. Kenya is through the Narumoru gate, which is an hour’s drive from the house.
NOTE: The Eco Camp is located on the border of Solio Ranch (famous for rhino breeding and unique rhino viewing experiences) and Olpejeta Conservancy (famous for its large elephant populations, Kenya’s only chimp sanctuary, and home to two of the world’s last remaining northern white rhinos).

Whistling Thorns Olpejeta Location
To get to Whistling Thorns Olpejeta, take the Nairobi-Nyeri superhighway. Turn right at the Marua interchange onto the Nyeri-Nanyuki highway. At Narumoru, turn left at the Narumoru Police Station in Narumoru (towards Solio Ranch) to the Lamuria junction. Turn right at Lamuria junction and drive through the tarmac road past Ngobit towards Withare Junction.
At the Withare junction, turn right (away from the tarmac road) and drive along the Olpejeta fence for 800 meters, then turn right for another approximately 1.5 kilometres, then turn left and drive 1 km to Kahuroko Shopping Centre. After 1 km, take a left turn towards Kahuruko Shopping Centre, then a left turn 500 meters, a right turn 500 meters, and a left turn towards Githira Primary School. Pass Githira Primary School for 300 meters, then turn right at the T-junction (there is an electricity transformer at the junction) for 200 meters. Turn left and drive for 400 meters before turning right. Drive for 600 meters. Your destination is on the left, among Whistling Thorn Trees.
NOTE: Because of its proximity to Olpejeta Conservancy, using Google Maps (https://maps.app.goo.gl/fDXnQGJKZZygMN6M7) tends to take people through the Conservancy. So it’s never a good idea to use Maps until you’ve arrived at Withare.
